A Differential Equation Based Approach Sound Synthesis and Sequencing

Differential equations have been extensively used to model dynamic systems and provide sophisticated tools for their analysis. This work explores the potential of applying differential equations to the musical synthesis of sound and also a rudimentary algorithmic composition tool through transport equations. The Fitzhugh-Nagumo relaxation oscillator is implemented as a sound generator and is found to exhibit a rich harmonic frequency spectrum. The sequencing of tones is done through the modelling of impulses propagating on a randomly generated network, inspired by star constellations, governed by a transport equation. The propagation of different initial conditions on the network define an amplitude envelope for the excitation of each node on the graph.
