Hand Gestures in Music Production

Today's music production interfaces are still dominated by traditional concepts. Music studios are a prime example of a multi-device environment with some of the most complex user interfaces. In this paper, we aim at introducing a more embodied interaction modality, freehand interaction, to this scenario. Not as replacement! We analyze typical music production scenarios and derive where freehand input yields added value. We give an overview of related research and discuss aspects of the technical integration into music studio setups. This is complemented by a survey that provides clues for the development of an intuitive gesture set for expressive music control.
