MOTIVIC THOROUGH-COMPOSITION APPLIED TO A NETWORK OF INTELLIGENT AGENTS

This paper presents the creation of two music compositions using motivic thorough-composition techniques applied to a network of intelligent sound agents. The compositions take advantage of the characteristics of the system, which is designed to monitor and predict the performer’s level of engagement. Then, it reacts within musical rules to generate non-intrusive, supportive sound and physical counter-actions. In the set of visual and written instructions com-prising the scores, the interactive system is fed with pre-composed musical motifs. These motifs are analysed in real time, stored and labeled with the performer’s current level of engagement. Ultimately, these motifs are recalled if necessary depending on their factor of complementarity in regard with the overall sonic space. We also discuss some of the key challenges in applying traditional composition techniques to an intelligent interactive system.
