The Effect of DJs’ Social Network on Music Popularity

This research focuses on two distinctive determinants of a DJ's popularity in Electronic Dance Music (EDM) cul-ture. While one's individual artistic tastes influence in constructing playlists for festivals, his social relation-ships with other DJs also have an effect on the promotion of his works. To test this idea, analysis on the effect of DJs’ social networks and audio features on song popu-larity was conducted. We have collected and analyzed 713 DJs’ playlist data from 2013 to 2015 that consisted of audio clips of 3172 songs. The number of cases where a DJ played other DJ's song was 15759. Our result indi-cated that DJs tend to play songs composed by DJs with-in their exclusive groups. The network effect was con-firmed controlling for the audio features of the song. This research contributes to better understand interesting but unique creative culture by implementing both social net-work of the artist communities and their artistic represen-tations.
